Book Interior Design It's what's on the pages inside that counts
Good clear interior design for your book is of paramount importance but there are a few things to consider. Firstly, in this age of mass self-publishing, clear and simple presentation is usually best; if you are publishing a fiction book for the first time then format and clarity displaying correctly across all platforms should be your biggest consideration. On the other hand, illustrations, custom headings and that little extra touch of design input can make all the difference. If you are publishing a non-fiction book then the chances are illustrations and photos are going to be involved quite possibly dozens included!
There really isn't one size fits all! (scroll to bottom for non-fiction book interior design options) For authors it's important to understand the different parts that make up a book. I am listing them here for a fiction book, Novel or Novella, but the principle order will be similar for many non-fiction works as well. We can design and format the interior of your book in a range of styles starting from as little as £45

Typical Parts to a Book Interior
(descriptions follow) Front of the Book • Testimonials (optional) • Author Bio / promotion (optional) • Title page • Copyright page / Edition notice • Table of Contents (or just 'Contents') • Foreword • Preface (optional) • Acknowledgments (optional) • Introduction (optional) • Dedication (optional) • Prologue The first thing to note is that there are a number of 'optionals'. I have left the most universal components as 'non-optional'. It's important to understand therefore that if you weren't deciding to include for example, a Foreword for whatever reason, then you would have a preface or an introduction of some sort instead. The prologue is a likely inclusion for most non-fiction works. Middle of the book • Chapters • Parts / Sections (optional) Back of the book (mostly all optional) • Epilogue • Afterword • Appendix/Addendum • Glossary • Bibliography • Index • Author Bio/promotion * * * * * |
Testimonials Page
Usually the first page when included. It can be used for testimonials if you want to display more than what will fit on the back cover. This page can also been used for advertising space; for example when the author might have someone supplying the funds to have the book printed.
Title Page
The title page of a book is the first page at or near the front which displays the book title, sub-title and author name. The title page should always be on the right hand side.
Copyright Page
This page is always on the reverse side (verso) of the title page and contains the legal copyright statement, publisher details and any other information that is of similar importance.
Table of Contents
Table of Contents (TOC) can be headed simply 'Contents', this is purely a matter of preference. It should list all the the parts of a book from thereon in and is organised in order and with appropriate page numbers attributed to the component parts by order of which they appear. Consideration should be given to first-level and second-level headers, such as Section, Chapters and Subchapter titles.
Foreword
A foreword is written by someone other than the author and usually found before any type of introduction the author may have written. It will often tell of some connection between the writer of the foreword and the story itself, or the writer of the story. Forewords for extended editions usually also talk about the differences between the two books.
Dedication
Usually a simple statement. If the book has been dedicated to the memory of, written for, or contains a strong theme relating to someone the author knows or has in mind, a dedication page makes this statement. It can occur before the TOC right after the copyright page if desired so.
Preface
A preface is an introduction written by the author of the book. It can include acknowledgements of the people who helped make the book possible. It will usually cover how the book was conceived and why. It might tell of the authors story surrounding the writing. It can be signed and dated to give it a fixed point in time.
Acknowledgments
This page is where the author thanks the people who helped them create the book, family, friends, editors and people who inspired them. Some of the types of inclusion might be for support in the following ways: moral, financial, editorial, presentational, instrumental/technical, and conceptual support.
Introduction
The introduction is written by the author and presents the purpose and goals for the content. It can describe, explain, and summarise the subject discussed. It can also introduce certain thoughts that are important but not included in the text that the reader will benefit from knowing before reading the book.
Prologue
The prologue is the 'scene setter' to a story. It often captures something from a quite different perspective from where the story might actually begin (the real chapter 1). The prologue is generally considered to be quite important and very effective. In a work of fiction a well written prologue will entice the reader in to wanting to read on and find out what the story is really about.
* * * * *
Chapters / Sections / Parts
This is the main part of the book.
The book can be divided into Sections/Parts that contain several chapters in each or it can flow as a sequential list of chapters. Chapters/Sections/Parts can have names or simply be in numerical order. There is no set length for either of these.
* * * * *
Epilogue
The epilogue brings closure to the book. It should relate to what the reader should naturally have to mind having read the book. It might ask a question or leave the reader with an afterthought!
Afterword
An afterword is more to do with the story of how the book came about, or how the idea for the book was developed.
Addendum or Appendix
A supplemental addition which corrects statements, presents new information, corrects inconsistencies.
Glossary
A glossary is a list of terms and explanations of concepts relevant to a certain field of study or action or items that are new to the subject of the book. It would normally but not exclusively be found in a non-fiction book
Bibliography
Bibliography is a listing of publications related to the statements cited within the book. This is used to present the research and reference material used to compile the books content. Again this is usually found in works of non-fiction but may be necessary in some fiction books.
Index
An index is the list of words and the page number they are discussed on within the book. There is a specific format for indexing and there are many computer programs and services available to assist in their creation. The most widely known include Cindex, Macrex, and SkyIndex. Not usually necessary in fiction works.
Author Bio/promotion
Nearly always, and certainly in fiction ebooks a short piece about the author and/or other works available should be included. this may or may not contain a picture or photo. It can be lengthy and is a matter of choice and relevance. Web links to various services of availability should be included.
